Summary:
Originally built in 1955 by the Emil & Pearl Walther family, the small concrete block structure was a drive-in with shaded picnic tables next to the building. The menu consisted of Vanilla Ice Cream, Orange and Grape Slushes, and Root Beer. The original building remains part of the structure today and the change drawer and drive-up window can still be seen on the inside.
- In 1960 the Clarence and Helen Hemmel family bought the restaurant and expanded the menu with the same Charbroiled Hamburgers served today and offered the first two-flavor twist ice cream cone in Mid-Missouri.
- In March of 1968, The Jim Schulte family purchased Daisy Delight from the Hemmels. In March of 1969 Jim changed the business from a drive-in to a sit-down restaurant by tripling the size of the building with a new dining room addition. The expansion was completed in May of 1969 and remains the same today.
- In May of 2003 The Bartel family bought the restaurant along with the adjoining apartment building and have owned and managed it since.
- In 2004, the City of Jefferson started the implementation of an extensive project to widen and resurface three miles of McCarty Street from the High St / McCarty St junction to the Highway 50/63 interchange, add round-a-bouts and a new highway intersection. During that eight-year closure of McCarty Street, Daisy Delight Restaurant was either on a dead-end street or completely inaccessible via McCarty Street.
- By implementing stringent management principles, cuts in labor, continued focus on customer satisfaction and persistent customer loyalty the restaurant was able to prosper under circumstances that would close any other restaurant faced with the same challenges. After the project’s end, efforts were immediately implemented to quickly expand the customer base and prosperity followed with unrelenting continuous growth through the present.
- As in those days, again in 2020 the restaurant was faced with the most challenging attack in history on small business and restaurants in particular, the Covid-19 pandemic.
- With the benefit of hindsight and experience, Daisy Delight fell back on the management principles that had successfully maintained the restaurant’s success in the past to ensure the profitability of the business. As it had before, the proven business principles, attention to our customers, and unrelenting customer loyalty continued to make the business profitable and continue the linear increase in annual gross revenue by 1%.
- 2022 proved to be another strong and profitable year with 7.84% increase over 2021 and the first 11 months of 2023 showing a 12% increase in sales. A sound testament to the future growth and prosperity of Daisy Delight Restaurant.
